New Music Friday – December 4, 2015

04Dec15

Some new releases to check out today and some new music I’ve been listening to:

A Head Full of Dreams by Coldplay: I have listened to this whole album today.  Coldplay seems to thrive when they go back to the basics of Chris Martin and a piano. Less is more with this band and they haven’t followed this rule for a while; really since Rush of Blood to the Head. I haven’t really enjoyed a record of theirs since, but they do make a return to some sparse production on this newest foray.  The good songs are classic Coldplay on this album but they are still in this mode of wanting to make anthemic hits and sometimes it just murders songs.  Overall, worth a listen and I added this to my library, so I guess that’s an overall endorsement.  The closer “Up&Up” might be the best song on the album too. Give it a go!

Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven by Kid Cudi: This album is already getting torn apart on social media. I’m only a couple tracks in and I have no idea what is going on here.  How far can he fall from his brilliant first couple outings?  Wait for reviews on this one, but not looking good.

Why? by They Might Be Giants: Come on, it’s They Might Be Giants.  It will probably be catchy and hilarious!

New stuff I’m munching on:

Moving Mountains/Prawn Split EP: Two of my favorite bands doing a split EP? Yes please.  Four really great songs here.

Waking Season by Caspian: Post-rock brilliance on display here. Just listen to this build.

And finally, the 3×3:
